Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
is the site of an annual “Castles & Scoops Contest,” which is a unique sandcastle & ice cream sundae building contest. Everyone is invited to “pack their sand shovels, molds, water bottles and sunscreen and head to the beach” for this event. This festive special event usually takes place in late August and benefits the Wilmington Children’s Museum. Prizes area awarded in seven categories. For more information on the Castles & Scoop Contest, please contact the Wilmington Children’s Museum.
The Museum of History in Wrightsville Beach also sponsors an annual event in August called the “Lumina Daze,” which is a celebration of the 1930s era of town. Activities range from old-time games, barbershop singing, big bands and ballroom dancing and face painting for the kids.
The nearby town of Carolina Beach is host to a Beach Music Festival in June. This event features live music, sandcastle building contest and lots of good food. Nautical buffs will love the annual Wilmington Nautical Festival, also held in late June. Visit the festival and help welcome magnificent tall ships as they sail into Historic Downtown Wilmington Harbor. There is a lighted boat parade, street fair, exhibits, musicians, artists and lots of food vendors. A great time for everyone in the family. Wilmington is also the site of Murder Mystery Riverboat Dinner Cruises and a Riverfront Farmer’s Market held each Saturday, April through December.
